The lymphatic system is a second independent transport system containing a colourless fluid called lymph.
Lymph is similar to blood but contains no red blood cells and less protein. It does contain white blood cells, and plays an important role in fighting infection.
Parts of the lymphatic system are lymph nodes that also make white blood cells. These can swell if a body part is infected.
Functions:
assists in returning tissue fluids to the blood circulatory system
produces some white blood cells
aids in absorption of fat from the small intestine
Did You Know That...? The spleen has two functions. It produces antibodies to fight infection. It is also a backup store of red blood cells and platelets.
